I would like to officially announce and share the news with you about the Congressional APP Challenge of 2021. Congratulations to Sam Appleby (librarian and computer science teacher) and his senior learner Rashaad Simmons who was the winner for Rep. Tim Ryan's district. This is the fourth time in five years that Coach Appleby has had a learner win the Challenge!!"

Akron Students Develop Mental Health App to Win Hackathon Competition

(Akron) – Harrison Rothschild, a sophomore at Copley High School, Kristian Chandler, a Senior at John R Buchtel CLC, Trevor Kiehl, a sophomore at National Inventors Hall of Fame® STEM High School and Zarriah Sweeney, a senior at John Adams College Careers Academy won the 2021 TECH CORPS Hackathon sponsored by AT&T and held at The University of Akron on Saturday, November 6. The team’s app provides a platform where individuals can find online therapy professionals in their area. The app also offers chatrooms, hotlines and social media posts for individuals going through similar situations.

All Akron Student Engineering Program Application 2021-22

This program is open to current high school juniors or seniors in the Greater City of Akron area. Admission to the program is selective. We are looking for talented, high-achieving students who have a passion for the STEM fields. These characteristics should be apparent in their transcript, personal essay and letter of recommendation from a teacher in the STEM fields or a guidance counselor. Grades are not the only criteria for admission.

S.A.F.E. Program

The program is called S.A.F.E. Self-Defense & Awareness, in which our trained experts teach valuable information of self-protection and preservation, with the goal to empower participants, build self-esteem, and learn self-defense. Additionally, we will feature guest speakers to address different issues in the community regarding victimization, self-esteem, and other important topics.

ACT 2021

ACT testing Day is October 19th. Seniors will be taking the actual ACT, 9-11 graders will take a practice test for baseline scores. Please see the schedule for the day. Note the slightly later arrival time for breakfast. If you are not getting breakfast you must be at STEM by 7:55 and in your testing room by 8 am. There will be schedules and testing rooms posted around the school for your reference.

Contemporary Issues of the Native American Community will be addressed by speakers commemorating Akron and Summit County’s North American First People’s Day, Monday, October 4, 7:00pm, at the Main Branch of the Akron-Summit County Public Library, 60 S. High Street. The preservation of American Indian History and Culture through art, music, and dance will be discussed by artist Peter Jones (Seneca/Onondaga) and ethnobotanist Linwood Tall Bull (Northern Cheyenne). Participating in the panel is Dr. Jodi Kearns, Director of the Institute for Human Science & Culture at the University of Akron, which currently features an art exhibit by Claire Heldman (Lakota, Cheyenne River Sioux). The Institute, located at the National Museum of Psychology in Akron hosts the Oak Gallery, an extensive exhibit of Native American art and artifacts...

GRAND REOPENING OF THE AFTER-HOURS SUPPORT CENTER

APS After-Hours Support Center Reminder: Do you need help getting started or completing assignments; help with your technology or other support outside of the school day? Please use the APS After-Hours tile on the Portal. Students or parents can call or they can click on the “joint with Google meet” to join a teacher in a meet for academic support, technical support, attendance, or any other concerns an APS family may have. The hours are Monday through Thursday 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
